Laboratory of Bioinformatics

Head of the laboratory: Dr. Česlovas Venclovas

Most of the work in Bioinformatics laboratory is performed with amino acid sequences of the proteins and their spatial structures. There are two main fields of scientific investigations:

Creation of the methods. Objective of this field is to improve computer methods, dedicated to identification of the relationships in protein sequences and comparison thereof, modelling of protein spatial structures and evaluation of the reliability of these structures.

Application of computer methods for solving certain biology problems. One of the most often occurring tasks is characterisation of spatial structures and interactions of proteins or their complexes. Even though computer methods are used for characterisation of various proteins, nevertheless, most of the attention is paid to proteins/ protein complexes, participating in DNA metabolism processes, for example, in DNA replication, recombination and reparation. The objective of these researches is to understand structural and functional characteristics of the proteins, to offer molecular protein operation mechanisms, to determine or to evaluate molecular interactions and etc. Such results are especially beneficiary, if they can be easily verified, by performing one or another laboratory experiment. Most of our works of this field are implemented in close cooperation with experimenting scientists both from Lithuania and from abroad.
